Girls show the Way in Dublin

Orla McInerney and Brenda Killalea were the only All-Ireland champions after three weeks of competition in the Open Youth and Novice championships held in the National Stadium. Orla McInerney Monivea had a split decision over Sarah Kiely Dungarvan in the the final of the 57Kg class while Brenda Killalea from Gort, boxing out the Lumpini boxing club, impressed all three judges winning on a 3-0 decision over Lathelle Berrigan Glasnevin in the final of the 75Kg class. Majella Hayden just came up short in the final of the 60Kg losing out on a split decision. Niamh Folan Conamara is hoping that she will make it a hat trick of wins for the Galway girls after her final was postponed. The lads weren't as lucky, in the Open Youths 52Kg final Frankie Cleary Olympic lost out on a tight call to AIBA World Junior champ Willie Donoghue Athy after one of the bouts of the championships, Shane Ward Titans also lost on a split decision in the final of the 91+Kg division.

Cleary Wins Silver

Frankie Cleary of the Olympic boxing club won silver at the 26-nation European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia. He was adjudged to have lost the 50kg final to Bulgaria’s Daniel Asenov – after a long delay to reach a decision. The officials at ringside took almost ten minutes to announce a verdict after the computer went down in the third and final round. Consequently, the five judges were called back to score the fight on paper and they handed Asenov a 3-2 majority decision. Asenov probably shaded the first fame, the Bulgarian walking through some solid rights to circumvent Cleary’s height and reach advantage and deliver on the inside. He also finished the round strongly. Cleary, however, began the second on the front foot and ended the frame on the front foot. Scoring almost exclusively with his right – he also found the target with a great left mid way through the frame – the Galway teenager clearly won the stanza. The third was more even. Asenov continued to drop home lefts, while Cleary continued to find the target with combinations. The Olympic BC ace went back to his corner at the end of the fight for a high five with Irish coaches. But, after the delay, Asenov got the decision.

Molloy Wins World Bronze

Kieran Molloy of the Oughterard Boxing Club won bronze at the AIBA World Junior Championships in Kiev, Ukraine. After three great wins Kieran had to bow out at the semi-final stage after sustaining a leg injury in the first round
Molloy’s gold medal dream ended after he twisted his right knee in a freak accident 1 minute and 27 seconds into the first round of his lightweight clash with Moldova’s Vladislav Tugui.
The Oughterard BC man, at 14 one of the youngest, if not the youngest, athlete competing at the 57-nation tournament at the Palace of Sports, suffered the injury as he was backing his opponent onto the ropes in the opening two minutes of what was building up into an intriguing battle of the southpaws.
The Irish champion received attention from the ringside doctor inside the ropes but it was obvious that he could not continue. The Galway teenager, clearly emotional at the circumstances of his exit, received a generous round of applause as he was leaving the ring.
That applause was totally deserved. Molloy showed his class, ability and composure to post three impressive victories in Kiev this week and he will also be taking home a bronze medal. He will also arrive home from the tournament undefeated.Irish coach Billy McClean said that Molloy received medical attention immediately after the fight and praised his performances in Kiev, a view echoed by Irish team manager Jim Walsh.
He said: “It’s very, very unfortunate that his magnificent campaign had to end like this. Kieran has been absolutely fantastic out here all week. He won three fights to get amongst the medals and he has done his country proud.”
Galway boxing had another representative in James Cleary of the Olympic BC, James lost on a points decision to England's Dalton Smith. James is one of the future stars of Galway boxing and has a great career ahead of him. Kieran's dad Stephen was on of the Irish coaches looking after the team of eleven. He was as calm as ever during Kieran's contests!!!

Holland International

Three Galway boxers represented Ireland at an international friendly in Amsterdam recently. Ryan Dervan Loughrea, Justin Barrett Titans and Colm Molloy Oughterard were part of an Irish representative side that took on the Dutch. Dervan won on a points decision, Barrett's contest was declared a draw while Molloy lost a points decision.
