Galway Squad Training
At last weeks Galway county board meeting, Eddie McDonagh has been appointed the new Galway county coach, Eddie will hold his first training session next Sunday February 24th at 11.00 in the Westside Gym, all clubs are asked to bring along their boxers and also coaches to help out on the day.
Big Night for Galway Boxing
Galway will have it's biggest ever representation at an Elite finals on Saturday next at the home of Irish boxing when four Galway boxers fight for the biggest prize in Irish boxing. These are unprecedented times for Galway boxing with this bunch of young talented boxers.
First Galway boxer in the ring is Adam Hession Monivea in the Flyweight decider where he takes on the teak tough Evan Metcalf from Dublin. In the semi-final Adam used all his skills to win comfortably against Ricky Nesbitt from Holy Family Drogheda, this young man is improving every time he boxes and will need to use all his slick moving and hitting skills to keep Metcalf at bay in the final, this will be the classic clash of styles.
Next contest sees Gabriel Dossen from the Olympic club, the powerhouse of Galway boxing, where he takes on the Emmett Brennan Glasnevin in the Middleweight decider. Gabriel has been one the best prospects in the country for the last few years and has been handled well by his coach Mike Mongan to get him here. This has been a great championships for Gabriel, he defeated the favourite and reigning champion Michael Nevin in a master class of technical boxing in the quarter final, a more straightforward 5-0 decision over Brett McGinty in the semi leaves him just 9 minutes away from the top prize.
The light heavyweight final will be contested by Conamara man Thomas O'Toole boxing out of the Celtic Eagles club in the city and the Cork fighter Tommy Hyde. Hyde comes with a big reputation and boxing ancestry, this will account for little when they go toe to toe on Saturday. Thomas has always been one of the cleverest boxers in Galway with his elusive style of countering, he had a tough semi final bout with the non stop aggression of David Bicevis (St Saviours OBA), if Thomas is able to impose his fight plan on Saturday he is in with a great chance.
Last of the four Galway boxers in action is the reigning welterweight champion Kieran Molloy Oughterard. Kieran has had a great year since winning his first Elite belt last year, he has gained great experience on international duty, competing at championships and multi nation tournaments. He had comfortable wins in the quarter and semi final bouts over boxers from Castlebar and Dublin. The final will need a huge step up in performance if he is to retain his title. His opponent is Patrick Donovan from the Our Lady of Lourdes club in Limerick. Donovan came through what was seen as the tougher side of the draw and has national titles at every level except Elite, it will be a cagey affair but if Kieran can bring his A game to the ring it should be enough and set him up on the difficult path to Toyko.
Bright Future for Galway Boxing
Three Galway boxers won National U22 titles at the home of Irish boxing with impressive victories, this adds to the Senior titles won before Christmas. Congrats to Adam Hession Monivea, Gabriel Dossen Olympic and Gytis Lisinskas Celtic Eagles, a proud moment for themselves, their families and clubs. Galway could have it's highest representation for many years if they decide to contest the Elites next month. Reigning champion Kieran Molloy and Antony Griffin are in sure to be there in what are very exciting times for Galway boxing.

Gabriel Wins Silver
Galway's Gabriel Dossen, Aaron McKenna and Eamer Coughlan proudlky display their medals today in Anapa
Ireland’s top prospects experienced mixed fortunes in the Pavlyukov Youth Memorial finals in Anapa, Russia this morning.
Irish captain Aaron McKenna capped a magnificent tournament after convincingly beating Russia’s Rashid Yangazie in the light-welter final on a unanimous decision. |
 |
But World Youth bronze medallist Gabriel Dossen, who was down in the second, had to settle for silver against Yangazie’s compatriot, Danis Gabdrafikov, in the welter class.
Irish coach Billy McClean hailed the performances of the Irish pair versus top class opposition at the “mini-World Championships.”
“Aaron was absolutely magnificent today and dominated his final against a quality opponent. It was a comprehensive win against the current Russian champion and let us not forget that Aaron beat a current World Junior champion in the semi-finals. We cannot commend his performances highly enough, said Irish coach Billy McClean.
“Gabriel finished very strong against his Russian opponent, a top class boxer. It was a big performance from Gabriel and he will be taking home a silver medal. All our squad performed magnificently here this week in a quality tournament.”
McClean also hailed coach Fergal McKenna, while Irish team manager Robbie Redmond praised the performances of the Irish team who have been in training camp in Anapa since earlier this month.
McKenna (gold), Dossen (silver) and Eamer Coughlan (bronze) finished in podium positions at the Black Sea Port.
Team Ireland are due to arrive home at 10.30pm tomorrow night via Dublin Airport. |

Olympic Club Double
Another great week in history of the Olympic boxing club Galway, a world bronze medal and a national senior title. Congrats to all involved in the club especially Mike and John Mongan the driving force behind the club.
Gabriel Dossen lost out to his Russian opponent on the tightest of margins a 3-2 split decision in the semi final of the AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia and brings a much deserved bronze medal back home to Galway. At the national senior championships in Dublin Frankie Cleary claimed another national title in the 60Kg division getting a 3-0 decision over Dylan Duffy (Pegasus), the club has certainly come a long way from the humble beginnings at the Holy Family centre in Renmore under their founder and coach Chick Gillen.
Gabriel Medals at Worlds
Olympic BC ace Dossen emerged from a cagey 64kg contest with Dominican Republic Rohan Polanco in the in the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia. This is an amazing feat at the first time of asking at an AIBA event, Russia’s Sergei Margarian awaits in the last-four on Friday. |
 |
Dossen Fighting for Bronze
Gabriel Dossen of the Olympic is just one contest away from a medal when he fights in the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Youth Championships in St Petersburg, Russia. After two wins over Freudis Rojas Jnr. (USA) and Hugo MiCallef (Monaco), only Rohan Polanco (Dominican Republic) stands in his way of securing at least bronze in the 64Kg division. Gabriel should be a role model for all young boxers who fall short of reaching their ambitions, after losing a few close decisions in All-Ireland finals, he persevered and is now mixing it with the best in the world.
Two in National Senior Finals
Two Galway boxers will contest the finals of the National Senior championships in Dublin this Friday. In the 60Kg final Frankie Cleary (Olympic) will take on Dylan Duffy (Pegasus), Frankie is no stranger to national finals and with his power and tact should add to his already sizable roll of honour. Thomas O’Toole (Celtic Eagles) is a relative novice at this level when he gets in the ring with Conor Ivors (Thurles) in the final at 69Kg. Thomas has been improving rapidly over the last few years and his accurate rangy style is always difficult to handle for any opponent, best of luck to both boys.
